The BDA is delighted to announce the launch of the 2015/16 Love Fisher Brown Award, sponsored by AeroBowls with entries now being taken up until Friday 27th May, 2016. Entry forms along with terms and conditions can be found by visiting www.playbowls.org/disabilitybowls/lfb
One of the entrants of the 2014/2015 award were Bowls Daventry, who secured a runner up place thanks to their recent activities and the impressive number of people they’d managed to engage:
Bowls Daventry was formed as an organisation to promote bowls widely across the Daventry and district region. With a desire to involve clubs from any code, the organisation has engaged with indoor and outdoor clubs while also promoting short mat bowls and petanque. Their disability activity has been led by Ian Litchfield who has developed a portable version of the sport which is then taken into a range of organisations such as nursing and care homes and local community groups to enable 500 disabled people to participate in bowls. Due to Ian’s extraordinary commitment and inventive solutions, the Bowls Development Alliance has award Ian a Volunteer Award in recognition of all he and his team have done to introduce bowls to disabled people within the Daventry region.
While also promoting the sport and engaging new disabled participants, Bowls Daventry has also been able to raise money for the Children’s Air Ambulance charity and Ian has written a book of poems which relate to his journey back from severe head injuries.
Dear colleague, I support around 150 people with intellectual and/or learning disabilities through my work in a college and through my role with special olympics. We are really keen to develop bowls. Please could you forward this onto the relevant person who could offer some advise to how we can get things started. Kind regards Benji Evans
